Millionth Circle

A Young Women's Circle

by Andrea Wachter

In October 2004, at a Millionth Circle workshop at Gather the Women in Dallas, Texas, I committed to begin a circle for women in their 30s and 40s. I felt my participation in a circle with a sacred center had been so nourishing, liberating and empowering that I wanted to bring these benefits to women at an earlier time in their lives than what I had experienced, having joined a circle when I was 58.

I started to speak with women I knew who I thought might be interested in circle. One woman who I had worked with said "yes" immediately. Another woman who I had also worked with was interested, but reluctant because she hopes to go to graduate school in Sweden next year. She decided to join the circle while she is here. A circle sister of mine told me about a high school teacher who is a single mom, who has joined the circle, but who will always have babysitter considerations. The daughter of a Millionth Circle Convener is also interested, but due to her work has not been able to participate yet.

The circle has met monthly since November and one additional woman has attended, a work colleague of one of the women already participating. This group meets in San Francisco, California. The women are looking for connection in an environment that is supportive and enriching. They have each felt a pull to a circle with a sacred center. The circle is holding. It is clear women in their 30s and 40s have different challenges from those in their 50s, 60s and 70s. They have young children, professional school and careers that provide challenges to their commitment to a circle with a sacred center.

Their first topic has been review of The Millionth Circle by Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D. This is providing a wonderful foundation for circle principles.

It has been exciting to see this circle come together and thrive.
